What is Hand Coffee Grinder?

When it comes to grinding your own coffee beans, there is no better way to do it than with a hand coffee grinder. Not only are they more affordable than electric grinders, but they also give you more control over the fineness of your grind.

A hand coffee grinder is a small, portable device used to grind coffee beans. The grinder typically has a cylindrical burr that grinds the beans. Manual grinders can be found in a variety of price ranges, and many are made with durable materials that allow for easy cleanup.

One benefit of using a hand coffee grinder is that it allows for more customization of the grind size than an electric grinder. This can be important for achieving the perfect cup of coffee. Additionally, hand grinders are often smaller and lighter weight than electric models, making them more portable.

Finally, many people find the process of grinding coffee beans by hand to be a pleasurable experience that connects them more closely to the final product. Grinding your own beans also allows you to store them whole, which can help preserve their flavor and freshness.

What can you do with Hand Coffee Grinder?

A hand coffee grinder is also great for grinding up herbs to make your own herbal tea. If you are traveling, a hand coffee grinder is a great way to take your favorite coffee beans with you. Just be sure to pack a spare grinding blade, just in case the original one becomes damaged.

A hand coffee grinder is also a great way to save money. Buying whole coffee beans is often cheaper than buying pre-ground coffee. By using a hand coffee grinder, you can grind the beans yourself, right before you brew your coffee. This will ensure that you get the most flavor out of your beans.

You can experiment with different types of beans, and you can also try grinding your coffee differently each time. By playing around with the grind size and the brewing method, you can come up with a cup of coffee that is perfect for your taste buds.

Benefits of using Hand Coffee Grinder

There are many benefits to using a hand coffee grinder, including the following:

  1. You have more control over the grind size. This is important because it affects the flavor and texture of your coffee. A coarse grind will give you a stronger, more bitter coffee, while a finer grind will give you a smoother, less bitter cup of coffee.
  2. It is more affordable than an electric coffee grinder. An electric grinder can cost anywhere from $30 to $200, whereas a hand grinder costs around $20.
  3. It is easier to clean than an electric grinder. All you need to do is wipe it down with a damp cloth when you are done using it.
  4. It is portable. This is an excellent feature if you like to take your coffee on the go.
  5. It is more environmentally friendly than an electric grinder. Electric grinders consume a lot of energy, whereas a hand grinder does not require any electricity.

So, if you are looking for a way to improve your coffee-brewing experience, I highly recommend using a hand coffee grinder. They are affordable, easy to use, and portable, and they produce better-tasting coffee than electric grinders do. Try one today!

1. Best Overall: Porlex Jp-30 Stainless Steel Coffee Grinder

Are you looking for a portable coffee grinder? Are you looking for a small, sleek, and discrete grinder? Are you looking for those above and a reasonable price?

Then the Porlex JP-30 Stainless Steel Coffee Grinder is the best option for you. It is a small, portable coffee grinder manufactured by Porlex and shipped directly from Japan, with as many as twelve grind settings for various options.

It is made of stainless steel for a sleek and high-quality appearance in the kitchen and is small enough to fit anywhere for on-the-go coffee. The Porlex JP 30 coffee grinder is one of the best available on the market. In this Porlex hand grinder review, let’s examine how well this product performs.

Numerous distinguishing features of the Porlex grinder set it apart from other products. Here, I will list a few and examine them in detail to demonstrate why this machine is so particular.

The Porlex hand coffee grinder is small, compact, and very user-friendly. You can choose from up to twelve different grind settings to achieve the desired consistency.

Decide which grind you desire, adjust the clicks to your preferred setting, place the beans inside and begin grinding! The ease of use makes it ideal for both seasoned coffee enthusiasts and novices.

This machine has a lock to prevent accidental adjustment of the grind setting during operation. Burr grinders ensure that the coffee is not heated during the grinding process and will not rust.

Because the grinder is simple to assemble and operate, it is also simple to disassemble and clean. Additionally, the handle is easily removable for storage or portability when not in use.

According to user reports, grinding the desired amount of coffee takes up to sixty seconds, so it is straightforward to use. The Porlex hand burr grinder has twelve settings for various grinds. Using the dial below the burrs, the grinder’s settings are adjusted. Removing the bottom cylinder canister reveals a “white nut” that can be unscrewed for a coarser grind or engaged for a finer grind.

As an example, grinds can range from ultra-fine for Turkish coffee to coarser for French press. Within the burrs is a spring system used to maintain consistency when producing coarser grinds.

Amazon offers the Porlex hand coffee grinder at a very reasonable price. Users have stated that this is an excellent value, given that the quality of the grinds they received was worth more.

The product’s chrome finish, chrome burrs, and small size make it a high-quality coffee grinder that costs less than USD 100. At the time of writing, the product had sold out on Amazon, and nearly all of the Porlex grinder reviews praised the product’s quality and value. This is a testament to how highly it is regarded!

Other hand grinders on the market, like the Porlex grinder, are not made with chrome burrs, have fewer grinding options and settings, and cost more.

2. Best Ceramic Hand Coffee Grinder: Hario Manual Coffee Grinder

Hario Ceramic Coffee Mill – 'Skerton Plus' Manual Coffee Grinder 100g Coffee Capacity

★★★★★
Amazon.com

This Hario Skerton Plus is an upgraded version of its predecessor, which appears identical. If you take good care of it, this coffee grinder is durable and will last a long time. It has a burr stabilizing plate that keeps the center shaft in place for a more consistent grind. I endorse it due to its affordability, volume, and ease of use in daily life. Given the low price, the lack of consistency in coarse grinding is somewhat acceptable.

If you brew in batches, the capacity of this hand grinder will meet your requirements. The upper hopper can hold approximately 75 grams of coffee beans, while the lower glass jar can hold up to 100 grams of ground coffee.

This grinder is constructed entirely of stainless steel. The burrs are made of ceramic, preventing them from rusting like metal burrs. Additionally, they do not affect the flavor of your coffee. The bottom is made of glass and includes a silicone pad that prevents the glass from shattering and protects your wooden table or countertop from scratches. A soft lid covers the top to prevent the beans from escaping. With the included lid, you can store the ground coffee in the glass after grinding it. All components are easily detachable and fully washable. For removing the burrs, a toothbrush will suffice.

With a locking piece and a small thumbscrew under the handle, you can adjust the distance between the burrs on the Hario Skerton Plus by changing the grind settings. It involves trial and error. I prefer a click system because it is more precise and makes it easier to replicate a previous grind setting. The consistency is quite reliable for finer grinds but less for coarser ones. If you intend to use it for a coarser grind setting, you may want to consider the Skerton Pro, which produces superior results with coarser grind sizes.

The Hario Skelton Plus is a low-cost, dependable hand coffee grinder. It’s well-designed, lightweight, and equipped with ceramic burrs. This hand coffee grinder’s shortcomings include a lack of consistency with coarser grinds and the inability to recreate grind sizes due to the absence of a clicking mechanism to recall previous settings. As someone with small hands, I also found the ergonomics lacking.

Key Features
  • Easy to Detach Stainless Steel Handle
  • Improved Grind Adjustment for Consistency
  • Stronger Grind Shaft
  • Fully Washable
  • Glass Bowl Hopper 100g Capacity

Unlike most manual coffee grinders available on the market, the MITBAK manual coffee grinder is one of the best hand coffee grinders you can get your hands on.

The stylish design gives users the impression of handiwork and is the ideal form of artistic display for the home. Unlike other hand grinders, this attractive grinder generates less heat and noise when grinding compared to standard electric grinders.

The adjustable grind setting will allow you to achieve the best fine or coarse grind. Unlike other blade grinders, the MITBAK manual coffee grinder’s razor-sharp blade can crush your beans to the desired consistency and shape with less time and effort. The clear acrylic container for grinding allows the user to see the contents and determine when to stop.

This manual grinder was constructed to last. It takes less time to grind than a manual hand grinder, so exerting yourself is not necessary. The size is comparable to a standard coffee mug, which does not require much space and allows you to decorate your kitchen counter without making it look cluttered. 4. Best Sleek Design: TIMEMORE Chestnut C2 Manual Coffee Grinder

TIMEMORE Chestnut C2 Manual Coffee Grinder Capacity 25g with CNC Stainless Steel Conical Burr – Internal Adjustable Setting,Double Bearing Positioning,French Press Coffee for Hand Grinder Gift

★★★★★
Amazon.com

The Timemore C2 is, in my opinion, the most affordable hand step-grinder available. It includes a good set of 38 mm stainless steel conical burrs and provides a consistent grind at a reasonable price. For medium grinds, turning the crank is easy and quick.

Depending on the bean size, the hopper capacity of this manual grinder is approximately 25 grams. The body dimensions are 147 mm by 52 mm, and the handle length is 159 mm. In total, the grinder contributes about 435 grams to the scale.

The Timemore Chestnut C2 is constructed with aluminum, stainless steel, and plastic components. The ground catcher and the upper body of this manual grinder are made from aluminum and plastic, providing a good grip and overall aesthetics. The handle is made of aluminum and plastic and is ergonomically designed.

To adjust the grind setting, Timemore provides a dial and click mechanism that is activated by removing the bottom catcher. Even though the manufacturer recommends 6-12 clicks for espresso, this is not where the C2 excels in grind adjustment. Once you reach 15 to 24 clicks for Pour Over or 25 to 27 clicks for French Press, you will be rewarded with a smooth and rapid grinding experience and a good particle distribution. Although this manual grinder produces a noticeable number of fines compared to high-end grinders, it performs admirably considering its low price.

The Timemore C2 hand grinder is the most cost-effective product in its price range. Even though it contains plastic components, it feels robust and sturdy. I appreciate the non-slip grid pattern of the housing as someone with smaller hands who finds the design aesthetically pleasing. In conclusion, this entry-level manual grinder is an excellent choice if you are beginning your home barista journey.

Key Features

The coffee grinder’s aluminum construction and stainless-steel burr make it durable and easy to clean.

With more than 24 click settings on the adjustable grind selector, the Heihox coffee grinder gives the user complete control over the coarseness of their coffee. The 38mm stainless steel coffee grinder with a conical burr features dual bearings that make the coffee powder more uniform and the grinding process more precise. 6. Comandante C40 MK3 Nitro Blade Black Hand Coffee Grinder

Comandante C40 MK3 Nitro Blade Black, one size, multi

★★★★★
Amazon.com

To improve my home barista skills, I recently exchanged my first manual grinder, a Porlex Mini, for a Comandante C40 Nitro Blade. This exquisitely designed coffee grinder is the best option for home brewers and professionals, despite its premium price. Comandante grinders are durable, meticulously engineered, and renowned for producing an incredibly uniform grind from ultra-fine to coarse.

The hopper and the bottom glass jar can accommodate 40 grams of coffee. Most of the high-quality components of the Comandante manual coffee grinder are made of stainless steel, except for the laminated finish layer on the body, the wooden knob on the handle, and the glass jar that collects the ground coffee. Also included are a few food-safe plastic components, such as the lid.

I had difficulty with the surface’s smoothness due to my small hands when I was grinding. My grinding experience has vastly improved since using the custom-made Comandante rubber band. The glass jar fits perfectly on top of the grinder, preventing beans from bouncing out when the hopper is filled. It has happened to me that the glass jar fell while I was grinding and shattered into a thousand pieces, so ensure that the lid is tightly screwed on before grinding the beans.

The included backup jar is helpful at this point. The show’s true stars are the conical burrs made of stainless steel that produce an exceptional particle distribution. Comandante does not discuss outer burr size because it provides no performance-related information. Their burrs are designed to provide the optimal balance of grind performance, speed, efficiency, and ease of use.

The extensive clicking mechanism allows you to adjust the grind size for everything from espresso to French press to cupping bowls. You will likely adjust the grind size by adjusting the three-pointed dial between 5 and 35 clicks, but the total number of clicks is significantly greater.

If you desire a finer or coarser grind, a diagram at the base of the click mechanism will indicate in which direction to move. Comandante created the Red Clix axle, which doubles the number of settings so you can fine-tune your grind even further. The standard axle offers 30 microns per click increments, whereas the Red Clix axle offers 15 microns.

The Comandante C4 Nitro Blade outperforms most manual grinders in this lineup, both in terms of price and performance, and satisfies the requirements for extracting all the right flavors from premium specialty coffee. If you are well-versed in specialty coffee and wish to take your brews to the next level, this is the grinder for you! It is suitable for amateur and professional use and, with proper care, will last a lifetime.

Key Features
  • C40 Nitro blade Commandant
  • A Ultra Durable Materials
  • Hochstickstoffhaltigem, Martensitic stainless steel with high
PROS
  • Superb build quality and durability
  • Top-notch burr set and overall mechanic
  • Fast, consistent, and reliable
  • Outstanding versatility: delivers great grind sizes for pour-over and French press, with decent results at the finer end
  • 40-45 g capacity
CONS

7. Best hand grinder for espresso: 1Zpresso JX Manual Coffee Grinder

1Zpresso JX Manual Coffee Grinder Silver Capacity 35g with Assembly Stainless Steel Conical Burr – Numerical Internal Adjustable Setting, Portable Mill Faster Grind Efficiency to Coarse for Filter

★★★★★
Amazon.com

The 1Zpresso JX Manual Coffee Grinder is your best bet if you are looking for a manual coffee grinder that is fast, satisfies your need for a consistent grind, and won’t break the bank. It’s one of the quickest manual grinders I’ve reviewed, and it’s a bit slimmer than the Comandante, which is great for portability and ergonomics. Sharp and durable conical burrs that guarantee excellent grinding efficiency are a plus.

The upper hopper can hold 30 to 35 grams of beans. Most components, including conical burrs, are made from stainless steel. The 1Zpresso JX feels sturdy and durable when held. A rubber sleeve guarantees a secure grip when grinding. The best method for cleaning it is with the included cleaning brush. If a thorough cleaning is required, all parts can be disassembled quickly.

The 1Zpresso JX Manual Coffee Grinder has an extensive array of grind settings. It is simple to calibrate and offers a wide range of adjustment levels to help you find your ideal coffee. It can be used for espresso, but it is not optimal. If you prefer espresso, the 1Zpresso JX-PRO Manual Coffee Grinder with 40 adjustment levels and precise 12.5-micron adjustments per click is the superior option.

The 1Zpresso JX is a premium, well-designed manual coffee grinder. It is effortless to use, and the grind consistency is remarkable for the price. A solid option for true coffee enthusiasts!

8. Best Travel Hand Coffee Grinder: Orphan Espresso Fixie Hand Grinder with Removable Burr Discs

Idaho-based creators of the famous Lido 3 grinder, Orphan Espresso, introduced a new ultralight travel hand grinder in 2020 with a focus on portability. The OE FIXIE has a set of hardened steel conical burrs and a system of disks and tuner shims to adjust the grind size. However, is the grind as smooth as its carbon fiber finish? Let’s find out!

The FIXIE manual hand grinder hopper holds 50 grams of coffee, while the grounds cup has 30 grams. Notably, the hopper is filled with beans through a side opening in the body rather than a top opening. The grind catcher will perform admirably but funneling in the beans by hand will likely result in an unpredictable outcome.

The FIXIE is exceptionally sleek and sturdy to give credit where credit is due. It contains an assortment of materials. A carbon fiber finish makes the body feel incredibly smooth. The turning handle is also carbon fiber, while the seal system comprises silicon. The cup is made of titanium and opens and closes with a slight twist. Aluminum is used for the top and bottom bearing plates, drive disk, and top assembly nut. The three FIXIE disks, one for fine, one for medium, and one for coarse grinding, are made of DELRIN®, whereas the shims are made of Teflon. The steel conical burrs can be effortlessly removed for cleaning by simply removing the handle. This means they can fall out quickly when adjusting to the grind, which brings me to my next point.

The FIXIE hand grinder uses spacers to adjust the grind. By removing the handle and stacking the FIXIE disks and shims, the grind size can be adjusted from fine to coarse. It is counterintuitive that finer grinding requires a taller stack of disks and shims. The FIXIE disks are marked to indicate whether they are intended for fine, medium, or coarse grinding. Once you have discovered the optimal combination of disks and shims, it is straightforward to replicate the grind size.

The OE FIXIE is a fantastic hand grinder for coffee lovers who prefer to travel light and generally stick to the same grind size. The grind adjustment system is not intuitive and requires some fiddling and adjustment. For fine to medium grinding, the FIXIE performs admirably, but minor inconsistencies become apparent as particle sizes become coarser. The grinding rate improves as the burrs are broken in, but it takes approximately one minute to produce 30 grams of medium-ground coffee initially. This manual grinder includes a bag with a pocket for the handle and a container for the disks and shims.

Key Features
  • High Tech materials to minimize weight
  • 47mm hardened steel grinding burr set by Etzinger
  • No Tools needed to disassemble
  • 4 Unique disc placements
  • Durable
  • Portable
PROS
  • Surprisingly consistent grind
  • Well-built (titanium and carbon fiber)
  • Travel-ready
CONS
  • Only 19 grind settings per disc
  • Not for hard core espresso drinkers

9. Porlex Mini Stainless Steel Hand Coffee Grinder

When I became serious about coffee in 2015, I purchased the Porlex Mini as my first manual coffee grinder. As I spent most of my time traveling, this well-constructed lightweight proved the ideal travel companion. I’ve brewed tasty coffees on the go with this grinder, even though there is a discernible range of particle sizes, which I believe is unavoidable given its price point. The Porlex Mini II, which features a newly designed burr set, is an update released. It is rumored to grind beans more easily, quickly, and evenly than the original. I haven’t had a chance to test it yet.

The maximum capacity of the hopper is only 25 grams of coffee. This is not the grinder for you if you regularly brew larger quantities of filter coffee. However, it will suffice if you’re a lone wolf like me who brews one cup of coffee at a time. One run will yield enough coffee grounds for one to two cups depending on the recipe.

The Porlex Mini’s housing is made of stainless steel and includes a lid. The rubber ring that encircles the body improves the grip and allows the handle to be attached to the grinder’s side for storage. Its ceramic conical burr set is spring-loaded and made from Japanese clay; it can be easily cleaned with a soft brush. Overall, this manual grinder feels durable, and its compact size facilitates a simple and rapid grinding experience.

By removing the grind catcher, you can adjust the grind setting by clicking the three-legged star at the bottom of the body between fine and French press coarse.

The Porlex Mini is a budget-friendly manual coffee grinder ideal for aspiring home baristas. It is particularly convenient for traveling and outdoor brewing due to its portability. It even fits within the AeroPress body. The grind adjustment wheel makes it simple to find your preferred setting. However, the coarser your grind setting, the more likely you are to encounter grind inconsistencies, which is typical of entry-level grinders. If grind uniformity in medium to coarse grinds is most important to you in a grinder, consider the following premium options.

Key Features
  • Ceramic conical burrs with wide range can grind from powder to French press
  • 20 gram capacity
  • 47 mm diameter and stands 130 mm tall
  • Made in Osaka, Japan
  • Stainless steel, static free body
PROS
  • Great portability, your reliable travel companion
  • With 16 clicks grind settings, Porlex Mini works well for many brewing methods
CONS
  • Small capacity for only 20g per grind
  • More expensive than other hand grinders

Best Hand Coffee Grinder - FAQs

If you are looking for the best hand coffee grinder, you have come to the right place. In this article, we will answer some of the most frequent questions people have about hand coffee grinders.

A hand coffee grinder is a small, portable device that you use to grind coffee beans by hand. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and some are even adjustable so that you can control the coarseness of the grind.

There are a few reasons why you might want a hand coffee grinder. For starters, they are portable and easy to use, so they are perfect for taking with you on the go. They are also relatively affordable, which makes them a great option for people who are just starting out in the world of coffee brewing.

Using a hand coffee grinder is relatively easy. Just fill the grinding chamber with coffee beans, screw on the lid, and start grinding. Be sure to pay close attention to the coarseness of the grind so that you get the results you are looking for.

There are a few different types of hand coffee grinders to choose from. The most common type is the conical burr grinder, which is known for its precision and consistency. There are also blade grinders, which are less expensive but can be a bit more difficult to use.

There are several benefits of using a hand coffee grinder. First, hand coffee grinders are portable and easy to travel with. They are also much quieter than electric coffee grinders, so they are perfect for grinding coffee beans in your home office or during meetings. Finally, hand coffee grinders allow you to customize the coarseness of your coffee beans, which can result in a better cup of coffee.

There are several factors to consider when choosing a hand coffee grinder. First, think about how often you plan to use it. If you are looking for a grinder that you can take on the go, consider size and weight. Next, think about the type of coffee you like to drink. If you like a coarse grind, you will need a grinder with a coarser setting. Finally, consider your budget. Hand coffee grinders range in price from $10 to $200.

There are three main types of hand coffee grinders: blade grinders, burr grinders, and manual mills. Blade grinders are the least expensive and most common type of grinder. They use a spinning blade to chop up the coffee beans, which results in inconsistent grind sizes. Burr grinders are more expensive than blade grinders, but they produce a more consistent grind size. Manual mills are the most expensive type of grinder, but they produce the most consistent grind size of all three types.

That is up to you! Electric coffee grinders are more powerful and can grind coffee beans more quickly than hand coffee grinders. However, they are also louder and more expensive. If you are looking for a portable grinder that you can take on the go, a hand coffee grinder is the best option. If you want a grinder that you can use at home, an electric coffee grinder is an excellent choice.
