Best Nugget Ice Maker At Home

Any ice enthusiast will tell you that not all ice is created equal. Many people claim that nugget ice, also known as pebble ice, is the best ice because it comes in small, perfectly soft, and chewable pieces. Popularized by Sonic and Chick-fil-A, nugget ice is created using an auger system that makes small cubes from compacted ice flakes, resulting in a soft and porous texture that absorbs a beverage’s flavors.

As you might expect, nugget ice makers are not as common as standard ice machines. Still, you can purchase residential and commercial nugget ice makers if you must have those amazingly chewable cubes.

Our Top Picks

What are nugget ice makers?

Many consider nugget ice, also known as pellet ice, Sonic ice, and “The Good” ice, to be superior for the following reasons:

  • The texture of nugget ice is designed to be lighter and airier, simulating the experience of biting ice cream.
  • Nugget ice lasts longer than crushed ice, preventing your beverage from becoming watered down as quickly.
  • Due to their diminutive size, nugget ice cools your beverage considerably faster than regular ice.
  • Because it is pleasant to chew on and lasts so long, pellet ice can be used not only for sodas and lemonades but also to add texture and ice to cocktails and frappes.

Nugget ice differs significantly from the ice in your refrigerator.

Are there any refrigerators capable of producing nugget ice?

You must either make the ice yourself (more on this later) or purchase a Nugget ice maker for your countertop to obtain the crunchy ice you crave.

You may believe that Nugget ice is like crushed ice from your refrigerator. However, how these two types of ice are produced substantially impacts their flavor.

Nugget Ice vs. Crushed Ice

Nugget ice consists of frozen layers of ice flakes. This procedure produces air pockets in the pellet ice nuggets. These air pockets are also why Nugget ice is so chewy and delicious.

Crushed ice is made from large cubes of ice that have been crushed into smaller, jagged pieces. These fragments of crushed ice range in size but retain the same rigid consistency as the larger ice cubes.

How Do Nugget Ice Makers Work?

Nugget ice makers, also known as pellet ice makers, are one of the most advanced ice machines available today.

The technology required to create the chewy, soft ice we all enjoy is remarkable. However, how do nugget ice makers work? That is precisely what we will discover today, so let’s get started!

When we look inside a nugget/sonic/pellet ice maker, we can see that the process of creating nugget ice entails multiple steps:

  • First, the water is passed through a metal cylinder containing a drill in its center.
  • As the cylinder fills with water, the refrigeration system will take effect, and the walls will begin to cool.
  • Eventually, ice will begin to form on the cylinder’s walls.
  • The auger will begin to rotate, scraping the cylinder’s walls and forcing the ice upwards until it reaches a storage compartment.
  • The storage space is filled with ice flakes from the cylinder.
  • The ice flakes are compressed into a single piece by passing them through a small tube.
  • At the end of the tube, the ice breaks into smaller pieces naturally or is cut into smaller, uniform nuggets using a blade.

Water must endure quite an ordeal before it can be transformed into sonic ice crystals.

Distinctions From Traditional Ice Makers

The process of conventional ice makers is considerably more straightforward.

First, the ice tray within the ice maker is filled with water. The water is then frozen using the refrigeration system. An electric element will then melt the ice in contact with the ice tray. The ice removal arm ultimately pushes the ice into an ice bucket.

Simple and easy!

How We Chosen

There is currently a limited selection of nugget ice makers on the market, and we considered several factors before recommending the best options. We evaluated each machine’s usability, dependability, and ice quality according to the reviewers’ opinions.

In addition, I have personally assessed the first-generation Opal Nugget Ice Maker, so I considered my experience with the machine when compiling this list. We aimed to provide a range of products at various price points that would be suitable for typical applications, such as home, office, and commercial use.

Best Nugget Ice Maker At Home

1. Best Overall: NewAir Sonic Ice Maker

One of my favorite aspects of the NewAir Sonic Ice Maker is that the first batch can be produced almost instantly. The NewAir surprised me by making the first batch of nugget ice in only 5 minutes, whereas other nugget ice machines require 20 minutes of waiting time.

This is due to NewAir’s ice maker’s high-powered cooling system, which makes it more efficient and faster than virtually every other nugget ice maker.

You also receive a simple self-cleaning function and water recycling to prepare any new ice for refreezing. Once the ice maker is complete, it turns off automatically, so you don’t have to worry about leaving it on for too long.

The design of the NewAir ice maker is relatively simple. You receive a compact and efficient method that is simple to clean and operate. Only two red lights and one power button are on the front panel. There are no dials or buttons; the device can only be turned on or off. One light indicates when the ice maker is complete, while the other indicates when the water supply has run dry.

It’s that easy. On top of the ice maker is a small transparent panel on the lid that indicates how much ice remains. This compact ice maker is ideal if you need a small countertop nugget ice machine. You can store up to 2 liters of water and 4.8 lbs of ice in the insulated ice compartment.

However, if you wish to host a party, you must still wait a little longer. The consensus is that you will receive approximately 20 ounces of ice for about five drinks.

If you want to fill the ice compartment, which can hold up to 4.8 pounds of ice, you will need to leave it running for approximately 3.5 hours. It produces ice twice as quickly as the best nugget ice makers.

Key Features
  • Makes “Nugget ice” is smaller than a sugar cube
  • Less than 12mins to make ice – Fastest on the market
  • Ultra-insulated interior, keeps your ice fresh for longer
  • Self-cleaning function
PROS
  • Extremely quick ice production
  • BPA-free plastic
  • Very effective ice bin insulation
  • High-quality materials
  • Compact enough to be a good countertop nugget ice maker
  • Self-cleaning feature
CONS
  • The ice maker can be quite noisy while operating
  • Fairly heavy
  • Expensive
  • Doesn’t keep running and will shut off automatically after it’s full

2. BEST with WI-FI: GE Profile Countertop Nugget Ice Maker with WiFi Connectivity

GE Profile Opal 2.0 | Countertop Nugget Ice Maker | Ice Machine with WiFi Connectivity | Smart Home Kitchen Essentials | Stainless Steel

★★★★★
Amazon.com

The GE Profile Opal 2.0 is the next-generation model of our Best Overall pick, and it features several enhancements, including Wi-Fi connectivity that enables remote machine control.

Bluetooth connectivity is unquestionably the most notable feature of the Opal ice maker. You can connect the Opal to your smartphone or tablet and control it, programming its ice creation, starting or stopping it, and adjusting the LED light’s brightness.

However, the app does not perform many other functions, such as notifying the user when the empty water tank. However, it is a smartphone-controlled ice machine, so I wasn’t expecting much app power control initially.

Like other nugget ice makers, the melted water will be reused to produce more ice. In addition, although it lacks a water connection option, you can get three times as much ice by attaching the Opal side tank.

The Opal Nugget Ice Maker may not produce ice as quickly as the NewAir model, but it does so fast enough. One pound of ice (or 14 ounces) is made every hour, with the first batch ready after 20 minutes. In roughly three hours, the three-pound capacity tray should be filled.

The Opal is less noisy than other options, but it still makes strange sounds, and GE warns you to expect “unfamiliar” sounds. The Opal produces nugget ices that are comparable to those produced by the NewAir and, yes, Sonic.

Key Features
  • Large-capacity bin that holds up to 48 ounces of crunchable nugget ice – that’s 24 pounds of ice per day.
  • Begin enjoying your first batch of ice in 20 minutes or less with the rapid production of this countertop ice maker.
  • Built-in WiFi with the SmartHQ app to monitor device status and schedule fresh ice. Plus, receive automatic software updates and access voice control capabilities through Alexa and Google.
  • LED display screen illuminates while being used and goes dark when at rest, providing distraction-free functionality that fits your home.
PROS
  • Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Streamlined design
  • Great nugget ice quality
  • Great-looking design
  • Removable ice tray
  • Easily attached extra water tray
CONS
  • Filter sold separately
  • Fairly expensive
  • Reportedly makes weird noises
  • You may want to buy the extended warranty

3. Also Great: GE Profile Opal Countertop Nugget Ice Maker

GE Profile Opal | Countertop Nugget Ice Maker with Side Tank | Portable Ice Machine Makes up to 24 lbs. of Ice Per Day | Stainless Steel Finish

★★★★★
Amazon.com

While ordinary ice cubes are inflexible and a potential source of tooth damage, good ice is soft. This type of ice is chewy, crunchy, and airy, composed of compressed ice flakes compacted into tiny snowballs. When submerged in a fountain soda or a glass of lemonade, nugget ice transforms into a chewable snack, creating a sensory experience that transcends the brute force of frozen.

These air-filled nugget ice makers are the most popular item at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Chick-fil-A, Sonic, and upscale mall food courts. Additionally, hospitals value pellet ice for its low choking risk and chewability. Although you can purchase a five-pound bag of chewable ice from a Chick-fil-A, the GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice Maker is the best nugget ice maker available.

The GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice Maker is an elegant, contemporary kitchen appliance. It can produce 1 pound of ice per hour, and its bin can store up to 3 pounds.

There is an option to purchase this machine with a side water tank that is simple to refill and enables you to produce more ice; as the ice melts, the water returns to the reservoir for reuse.

The GE Profile Opal can produce nugget ice in as little as twenty minutes and can be controlled via Bluetooth from a smartphone.

Key Features

The machine can produce approximately 30 pounds of ice per day and its first nuggets within 30 minutes, but it can only store 1 pound of ice. For optimal results, the KBice Maker requires distilled or purified water and has a self-cleaning function for simple maintenance.

7. Frigidaire countertop nugget ice maker 26lb

Frigidaire Compact Countertop Ice Maker, Makes 26 Lbs. Of Bullet Shaped Ice Cubes Per Day, Silver Stainless

★★★★★
Amazon.com

If you’re looking for a simple machine for your home, this compact, portable, and inexpensive option is a good fit. It weighs 17 pounds and can produce up to 26 pounds of ice per day, which is sufficient for a family but insufficient for parties.

This Frigidaire nugget ice maker has a transparent lid to see what’s happening inside. This easy-to-use countertop ice maker can obtain crunchy, soft, and chewable ice. This icemaker’s design and form would complement the aesthetic of your kitchen. As it is a portable countertop, you need an electrical outlet, and you’ll have restaurant-quality ice within 15 minutes.

The ice maker’s portability allows you to take it camping and on trips. It is an excellent product for producing crunchy ice nuggets quickly. It’s a terrific value that makes suitable ice ideal for your beverages.

This countertop ice maker is quite simple to operate. The panel is simple to read and comprehend. Pressing the touch buttons turns them ON or OFF. Fill the upper reservoir with water to make ice.

After turning the machine on, the ice button is pressed. Within five minutes, the ice in the container will become crunchy.

When the ice machine is not being used to make ice, you can press the UV button to purify the water of any minerals; the machine will do its job automatically.

Key Features
  • Produce 26 Pounds of Ice Per Day
  • Easily Portable
  • See-through Design
  • Digital LED Control Panel
  • 2.3 Quart Water Reservoir Capacity,
PROS
  • Makes two sizes of ice (large and small)
  • Average speed (6 to 9 minutes).
  • It’s small and lightweight.
  • Easy to use.
  • Portable. Perfect for trips.
  • Includes an ice scoop.
  • All water from melted ice goes back into the system.
CONS
  • Low storage capacity (around one pound or less).

8. LITBOOS Portable Ice Makers Countertop

This LITBOOS machine is slightly larger than its predecessor, but it remains portable and compact. It has a simple design and weighs 24 pounds; you can adapt it to your kitchen, RV, or bar counter.

It can produce up to 26 pounds of ice daily and has a storage capacity of 1.5 pounds (about 80 pieces). The capacity is average for a small machine.

This device’s easy-to-use controls and low energy consumption are two of its best features. It is simple to operate and can produce ice in three different sizes.

The nugget ice maker produces hollow ice cubes in the shape of bullets. This shape has a larger contact area than square ice cubes, both an advantage and a disadvantage. The advantage is that ice cubes made with this machine cool drinks more effectively than square ice cubes, but the burden is that they melt quickly.

It produces nine ice cubes per batch, with each batch typically taking between 7 and 11 minutes to make. It has three ice cube size settings, including small, medium, and large. The large setting produces larger ice cubes than most portable/countertop ice makers of comparable prices.

The ice basket is not refrigerated so that ice cubes will melt; however, the ice maker appears to be well insulated as they don’t melt too quickly.

The control panel consists of three buttons and five indicator lights. Two buttons start and stop the ice-making process, while the third is used to select the desired ice cube size.

Three indicator lights indicate which ice cube size setting has been selected; each size setting has its own dedicated indicator light. The remaining two indicator lights alert you when the water reservoir is empty, or the ice basket is full.

The ice maker LITBOOS ZB-12-C-2 leaves mixed impressions. On the one hand, it produces more giant ice cubes than most other ice makers. Still, on the other hand, it is unattractive, has design flaws, and most importantly, has more reliability complaints than usual.

Key Features
  • Compact AND POWERFUL
  • 3 ice sizes
  • 30 pounds a day
  • Super Quiet And User Friendly
PROS
  • Makes three sizes of ice (small, medium, and large).

Factors To Consider When Choosing The Best Nugget Ice Maker At Home

Suppose you’re in the market for a nugget ice maker. In that case, you’ll typically be able to choose between countertop models designed primarily for home use and more prominent, more expensive commercial models. However, none of the options are inexpensive; even the most minor home units cost over $400.

Several factors should be considered when comparing nugget ice makers, including the amount of ice they can produce per day, the amount of ice it can hold, whether the ice compartment is refrigerated, and whether it connects to a water line that must be manually filled. In addition, some machines can dispense nugget ice directly into your cup, while others have a bin for scooping ice.

If you’re ready to stop purchasing 10-pound bags of nugget ice from Sonic or Chick-fil-A and would instead make your ice at home, there are a few things to consider before buying a nugget ice maker.

Price

Spending more than $10,000 on a nugget ice maker is possible. The most expensive models are commercial-grade machines from manufacturers such as Manitowoc, primarily selling to restaurants and bars. Fortunately, several affordable countertop nugget ice makers are designed for homeowners.

These models, which are typically priced between $400 and $700, are not inexpensive, but they are the easiest and least expensive way to obtain the delicious chewable ice you crave. However, they produce significantly less ice than portable ice makers, which brings me to my next point: yield.

Yield

Before purchasing a nugget ice maker, you should consider not only the number of people in your home who will be consuming ice but also the production rate (ounces per hour) and the size of the ice bin (also represented in ounces).

Ice Maker Style

Most of the recommended ice makers in this guide are countertop models, which are the cheapest and easiest to acquire. Several appliance manufacturers, including GE, have developed ice makers installed beneath the kitchen countertops. This type typically costs between $3,000 and $5,500, but because it produces and stores larger quantities of ice, it is a good option for individuals who frequently host parties. Before purchasing an ice maker, ensure you have the necessary space by measuring!

Since 2014, I’ve been covering home appliances. At my previous position with Top Ten Reviews, my team reviewed one of the first home ice makers, the FirstBuild Opal. I’ve since tested several ice makers from manufacturers such as GE, Newair, and Frigidaire.

I timed how long it took the nugget ice makers to produce a whole bin of ice to determine whether their advertised yields were accurate. I have also read hundreds of customer reviews from nugget-ice enthusiasts who shared their positive and negative experiences with nugget ice makers. I am confident that the following models are the most durable, easiest to maintain, and will bring your preferred chewable ice to your kitchen.

Best Nugget Ice Maker At Home – FAQs

In this section, I’ll answer some frequently asked questions about pellet ice makers to ensure you have all the necessary information!

Numerous stores and dining establishments sell nugget ice. Amazon has the most outstanding selection of nugget ice makers available for purchase. There are multiple types of nugget ice makers, including countertop, freestanding, and under-counter models.

You’re in luck if you’re looking for a refrigerator with a nugget ice maker. Due to the increasing demand for “the good ice,” some manufacturers have begun designing refrigerators with pellet ice makers.

Bespoke 4-door flex is the name of Samsung’s brand-new ultra-luxurious refrigerator that produces sonic ice.

In addition to Samsung, LG and KitchenAid are also entering the market with new refrigerators featuring nugget ice makers.

Certainly, something worth investigating!

Again, the type of nugget ice maker ideal for you depends entirely on your preferences and needs.

Let’s examine each of them more closely.

Countertop

The primary benefit of small countertop models is that they are simple to assemble and install. Most of them have a water reservoir, so you won’t need to connect it to a water source. Countertop models are also the most versatile and transportable. Perhaps most importantly, the three countertop models are the least expensive (approximately $300-$700).

However, at this price point, ice makers typically produce between 25 and 50 pounds of nugget ice per day (which is still a lot for an average family). In addition, they can take up considerable counter space. These are specific considerations to keep in mind.

Freestanding

Freestanding models can produce more ice, but most of them require a connection to a water supply. These standalone ice makers are not inexpensive, but for the price, you can produce 50-300 lbs of nugget ice per day.

Typically, these freestanding nugget ice makers are used for commercial applications.

Under-Counter

Under-counter nugget ice makers are ideal for ample space under the countertop kitchens. With these models, both built-in and “freestanding” options are available.

Comparable to freestanding nugget ice makers, the under-counter models are pretty expensive.

Numerous individuals want to know if sonic ice can be created without a sonic ice maker.

In part, the answer is…

It is possible to create small pebble-style ice at home, although achieving the same soft and chewy structure as with a nugget ice maker is impossible.

You just need the proper equipment and to take the appropriate steps!

If you wish to learn more, please refer to my article on making pebble ice at home.

Many individuals cannot distinguish between flake ice and nugget ice.

While nugget ice has a more solid form and is roughly the size of a tater tot, flake ice can range from small pieces resembling coarse snow to 9 mm thick.

It is perfectly reasonable to question the longevity of nugget ice makers, given their price tag.

A nugget ice maker’s longevity is contingent upon several distinct factors. The most important factors are the ice maker’s frequency of use and the quality of its maintenance over the years.

The expected lifespan of a nugget ice maker is between 4 and 10 years (depending on the brand and the other factors mentioned) or the length of the machine’s warranty. Beyond the contract, however, there is no guarantee.

There is no universal answer to whether a nugget ice maker is worthwhile, as the answer is primarily determined by individual preference.

Weigh the pros and cons and respond as truthfully as possible to some essential questions.

Depending on the type of sonic ice maker, you may spend between $350 and $5,000 or more. This is a substantial amount of money for the typical person. Why do these nugget ice makers cost so much?

Since they are highly sophisticated machines employing intricate technology, the technology used by nugget ice makers is significantly more advanced than conventional ice makers. You can learn everything about it by clicking here.

There is no standard size for nugget ice, as the creative process is complicated and involves numerous steps. Each nugget of ice is rendered unique by freezing, shaving, and compressing the water/ice.

In general, however, most nugget ice makers produce nugget ice between 1/2 and 1 inch in width and length.

Conclusion

Nugget ice makers are equipped with highly advanced technology. This also explains the high cost of nugget ice makers.

However, in my sincere opinion (albeit somewhat biased as a nugget ice maker addict), it is worth it! Comment below on what you think of this innovative piece of technology.
